Can You Buy Dental Insurance Without Health Insurance?

Posted on 4/1/2024 by Weo Admin
healthy teeth and oral hygeineDental insurance can be bought as part of health insurance or separately from a private broker, insurance broker, or health insurance marketplace. If your health insurance plan includes dental, you pay one premium covering health and dental. Take time to compare plans and what aspects of dental care are covered before purchasing.

Why Do You Need Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance protects against various costs related to dental care. This way, dental insurance gives you peace of mind even when you desperately seek dental health services. The American Dental Association states that about 70 percent of Americans have access to public or private dental insurance. Dental insurance covers both curative and preventive dental care costs. Costs for essential treatment of teeth and gum disorders are covered. Tooth extractions, braces, essential implants, crowns, dentures, and bridges are covered.

Non-essential treatment procedures such as teeth whitening, teeth reshaping, gum contouring, veneers, and dental bonding are usually not covered. Coverage significantly differs from plan to plan, and you should talk to your insurer to know exactly what your package costs.

If you opt for a separate dental plan that is not part of your main health plan, you must pay a separate premium. These separate dental premiums are bought from the health insurance marketplace set up under the Affordable Care Act or directly through your insurance company. The dental plans bought from the ACA marketplace fall into either high or low coverage levels. The high-coverage plans have higher premiums but low deductibles and co-payments. The lower coverage plans, on the other hand, have lower premiums but higher deductibles and co-payments.

Closing Remarks

Take your time to compare marketplace plans for details about the premiums, co-payments, and deductibles of each plan. You can also buy stand-alone dental insurance plans separate from your main health plan. Consult with your insurance company or broker for more information on dental plans.
