This is an important step in taking care of your oral health and preventing further damage to your teeth. But now that you have a new filling, it's important to know how to care for it properly.

Here are some tips to help you keep your new filling in top shape:

Right After Your Filling

•  Follow your dentist's instructions carefully. They will give you specific instructions on what to eat, drink, and avoid in the first few days after your filling is placed. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully to allow the filling to properly set.
•  Be mindful of numbness. The area around your filling will likely be numb for a few hours after the procedure. Be careful not to bite your cheek or tongue during this time.
•  Avoid hard and sticky foods. For the first 24 hours, it's best to stick to soft foods that are easy to chew. Avoid hard foods, such as nuts and candy, as well as sticky foods, such as caramel and taffy, which can pull on the filling.
•  Brush and floss gently. You can brush and floss your teeth as usual, but be gentle around the new filling. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid using harsh brushing motions.

Long-Term Care

•  Maintain good oral hygiene. This is the most important thing you can do to keep your new filling healthy. Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss daily.
•  See your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are essential for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist will be able to check your fillings and make sure they are in good condition.
•  Avoid biting on hard objects. This includes things like ice, pens, and fingernails. Biting on hard objects can put stress on your fillings and cause them to chip or break.
•  Wear a mouthguard if you play sports. If you play sports, it's important to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth from injury. This is especially important if you have fillings, as they can be more susceptible to damage.

What to Expect

•  Some sensitivity is normal. It's normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold after getting a new filling. This sensitivity should go away within a few days or weeks. If the sensitivity is severe or doesn't go away, be sure to contact your dentist.
•  Your filling may need to be replaced eventually. Fillings are not permanent and will eventually need to be replaced. The lifespan of a filling can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the type of filling material used and how well you care for your teeth.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your new filling in good condition for many years to come. If you have any questions or concerns about your new filling, be sure to talk to your dentist.
