Do You Care for Your Dental Crowns Properly? If you have dental crowns, you will find they are excellent restorations. Care for them properly, and they will preserve your smile.

Caring for Dental Crowns - What You Should Know

Dental crowns serve as a protective barrier over a tooth, which either has deep decay or had root canal surgery. They may also be used to cover a cracked or chipped tooth or a tooth that can no longer hold a large filling. If a tooth is missing, we may fill in the space with an implant and a crown. To maintain a crown, you need to care for it, as you do your regular teeth. Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once daily. By taking this approach, you will find that a dental crown can last for decades.

What Toothpaste Is Best?

When brushing the teeth, use a toothpaste that is ADA-approved that also contains fluoride. Fluoride will prevent a tooth from decaying further and will keep your crown intact. If you are unsure what to use, ask us for a recommendation.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

Usually, we can place a dental crown after a root canal over an original tooth, or, if a tooth is missing, we can place a crown with an implant. In fact, you can get a crown in a day if you undergo implant surgery. If you get an implant and crown to replace a missing tooth, we need to make sure your gum health is good and that you have enough bone to hold the implant. For a traditional crown, it will take an impression of the tooth and place a temporary crown on the tooth until the permanent crown is made in the lab and sent back. We can also use 3D modeling to provide a patient with a crown restoration.
