Nitrous relieves patient anxiety through its calming effects on the nerves, muscles, and brain. It is especially useful in those who suffer from fear or pain during dental procedures such as fillings or extractions. 

How does it work?

Nitrous oxide works by causing dilation of blood vessels, which leads to a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate. The gas may also cause increased saliva production, which serves to moisten dry mouth caused by stress; this can be helpful for people who have difficulty swallowing under normal circumstances. There are no negative side effects associated with nitrous use, but you mustn't drive or operate heavy machinery while using the gas.

Why do dentists use nitrous oxide?

Dentists use nitrous oxide because it allows them to perform more difficult procedures with greater ease and comfort for the patient. Anesthesia and sedation make many patients feel at ease, which leads to a lower stress response when they are in an unfamiliar environment such as their dentist's office.

Nitrous Oxide is especially useful for those who suffer from fear or pain during dental procedures. It relaxes the patient's muscles and numbs their senses, making them less aware of what is happening around them.

When should you not use nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is not recommended for anyone with a history of schizophrenia, epilepsy, or who has had a previous bad reaction to the gas. The effects can also be heightened in people who have respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. Pregnant women should avoid using nitrous altogether because it may cause harm to their unborn child.

Side effects of using nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide has very few side effects. Some people may experience lightheadedness or nausea, but these symptoms are typically short-lived and can be alleviated by breathing fresh air.

There is also a possibility of dizziness if the patient stands up too quickly after using nitrous oxide. Hence, it's important to remain on your feet for at least 15 minutes after the procedure is over.
