Is Invisalign® Right for Me?

Hand holding clear aligner tray from Cooley Smiles In recent years, Invisalign has become a popular alternative to traditional braces, especially for adults. Invisalign may be the ideal choice for you if you are worried about the embarrassment and stigma associated with adult braces. This is because the Invisalign system is designed using clear plastic aligners that are virtually invisible. With Invisalign, you do not have to worry about your orthodontic treatment negatively affecting your professional or personal life! You may be wondering how the whole process works. At Cooley Smiles, we can provide you with the information you need to determine if Invisalign treatment is right for you!

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that is designed to gradually move your teeth into the correct position using a series of clear, plastic aligner trays. The system is designed to treat mild to severe cases of crooked or crowded teeth, underbites, overbites, and other malocclusions (misaligned bites).

The process begins with a consultation appointment, where we will determine if you are a suitable candidate for Invisalign treatment. Once we have determined Invisalign is right for you, our Cooley Smiles dentists will take photographs, x-rays, and molded impressions of your teeth and gums. This information will be sent to Invisalign so they can fabricate your trays. Each tray will be worn at two-week intervals until treatment is complete. After you finish your series of trays, we create a retainer that keeps your teeth in the proper position.

How We Use Invisalign to Correct an Underbite or Overbite

Invisalign not only moves your teeth to a straighter position, but it also corrects your bite. If we do not correct your overbite or underbite, you will still experience oral health problems and discomfort. Each aligner applies pressure to the teeth that moves them to the right position. This means that if your overbite or underbite is caused by the position of your teeth, we can correct it using Invisalign. If your malocclusion is caused by the position of your jaw, you may need a more extensive form of orthodontic treatment.

How We Use Invisalign to Treat Overcrowded Teeth

Overcrowded teeth can cause problems with your bite, and be difficult to keep clean. If you have overcrowded teeth, you may experience problems with tooth decay and structural damage. Invisalign treatment is the least invasive method to straighten your teeth and eliminate crowding issues. If your crowding issues are severe, you may also need a tooth extraction to make more room in the jaw.

Which Is Better for Me, Invisalign or Braces?

Whether or not Invisalign is right for you depends on the severity of your orthodontic issues. However, Invisalign does offer some benefits over traditional braces. Everyday tasks such as eating, brushing, and flossing your teeth are much easier with Invisalign because the trays are removable. There is also less discomfort with Invisalign than traditional braces. Most patients find the discrete trays to be the biggest benefit of Invisalign. You may find that family and friends do not notice you are undergoing treatment!
